GPT-5 Release Date: What You Need To Know About OpenAI's Next Generation AI Model
In 2023 OpenAI introduced various update for ChatGPT, like GPT-3.5, GPT-4, GPT-4 vision and the GPT store. In the ever-evolving industry of artificial intelligence (AI), GPT-5 is the next of the series of OpenAI ChatGPT GPTs models that the CEO Sam Altman has confirmed the team is working on.
On December 2023 in fact Sam Altman has told the journalists at Davos that differently from the previous Generative AI models that OpenAI has released, GPT-5 "will be ok"
What to expect from GPT-5?
The next generation artificial intelligence will have better understanding of more forms of media, improved reasoning ability and be more reliable then before, as OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has told to Bill Gates on the latest episode of Gates' podcast Unconfuse Me in early January 2024.
What is GPT-5?
GPT-5 is the latest upgraded model of the OpenAI GPTs Series of Generative AI models and most advanced chatbot that the team of researchers are developing and training currently.
GPT stands for generative pre-trained transformer, which is a type of large language model that can create human-like text and content such as images. In the case of ChatGPT, the AI chatbot can conversationally answer questions.
OpenAI filed a trademark application for GPT-5 in July 2023 suggesting the new model may come later on 2024. Source
In November 2023, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman told the Financial Times that his company was working on GPT-5, although he did not reveal a timeline for its release.
Altman had previously quashed rumours that the firm was training the new AI model in March and June.
However, things changed in the autumn. Altman allegedly spoke about GPT-5 and GPT-6 during a talk at his former venture capital firm Y Combinator’s alumni reunion in September, according to two people who attended the event.
What can GPT-5 do?
As Iba Masood the founder of a Y Combinator-backed AI startup stated in one of his tweet on X, Sam Altman said that GPT-5 and 6:
-
Would do a more reliable job, with better personalisation, with multi-modal outputs. However, it will still fall far short of an AGI.
-
GPT-5 and GPT-6 will be getting costs down and reliability up.
-
So far, scaling laws have applied to large language models, it’s been a transistor like moment with Moore’s law. Scalability and market forces will allow models and the ChatGPT GPT API to become cheaper.

Most important lessons from early days of building:
🔸Thinking long term will take you far. Open AI experienced [many] pivots. From robotic arms to… pic.twitter.com/ikDJ2CcS4F
Building upon the success of its predecessors, GPT-3 and GPT-4, which boasted 175 billion and over one trillion parameters, respectively, GPT-5 is expected to utilize an even larger dataset, potentially reaching multiple trillions of parameters.
This expansion implies a significant capability enhancement, particularly in natural language processing, reasoning, creativity, and overall versatility.
GPT-4 versus GPT-5
Regarding the aspects of GPT-5, it has been anticipated that during the training process will be required an increased volume of data.
Here's what will change with ChatGPT GPT-5:
- Data Training. GPT-4 has knowledge of the world events up to mid 2023, GPT-5 is expected to have knowledge up to the latest events or even real-time
- Power. GPT-5 is expected be 10 times more powerful than GPT-4.
- Enhanced Language Comprehension. With an extensive knowledge base, GPT-5 will be capable of understanding and responding to complex queries with greater accuracy and contextual understanding.
- Fully Multimodal. During the Uncofuse Me podcast with Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, Sam Altman the CEO of OpenAI said that this new generation of the lauded language model that powers ChatGPT will be "fully multimodal with speech, image, code, and video support", which means it may also generates videos.
At the time of writing this blog post, GPT-5 has not been released, and as such, the facts and stats provided in this article are purely speculative and not based on actual data. Upon the release of GPT-5 and the availability of concrete data and statistics, more updates will be provided accordingly.
GPT-5 latest updates
A curious fact has been reported. Some ChatGPT users recently claimed the bot had told them it was running on a new AI model called GPT-4.5 Turbo, but that was an error.
I was initially skeptical that these screenshots were real, but this does seem to be replicable on my end.

Whether this means it’s actually GPT-4.5 behind the scenes or not… who knows. https://t.co/FZrc4K4VqK pic.twitter.com/TrQYSmFhAn
